Fit is evaluated on something. Choosing what determines how much you learn before production.
Dress forms
A form is consistent, always available and useful for checking measurements, symmetry and hang. It does not move, which limits what it can tell you about wear.
Fit models
A fit model is a person with measurements matching your base size. They can move, sit and report how a garment feels, which reveals problems a form cannot.
Consistency matters more than either choice
Use the same form or the same model throughout development. Changing between fit sessions introduces variables that make comments impossible to interpret.
A practical approach
- Use a form for measurement checks and construction review
- Use a fit model before approving the pre production sample
- Evaluate in motion, not only standing
- Record comments against specific points of measure
Your base size is a decision
The size you develop on shapes the whole range. Choose one near the centre of your intended range, and make sure it reflects your actual customer rather than an industry default.
