Sweatpants look simple and carry more fit risk than most tops, because the fit points are less forgiving and vary more between bodies.
Fit points that decide the garment
- Rise, which affects comfort more than any other measurement
- Thigh circumference and how it relates to the knee
- Taper from knee to hem
- Inseam length across the size range
- Waistband height and elastic tension
Waistband construction
Elastic width, whether it is enclosed or exposed, and how it is attached determine both comfort and how the garment ages. Elastic that twists inside a casing is a common complaint and a preventable one.
Grading needs care
Rise and inseam do not scale at the same rate as waist. Applying a uniform grade produces garments that fit at the middle sizes and fail at the ends.
Pockets and cuffs
Pocket bag depth and placement affect whether the garment is actually usable. Cuff rib quality determines whether joggers keep their shape at the ankle.
Test on real bodies
Bottoms are worn in motion. Fit sessions should include sitting, walking and bending, because problems in rise and thigh appear under movement rather than standing still.
