Plenty of brands producing in Los Angeles are based somewhere else. The advantages of domestic production survive the distance if a few things are handled deliberately.
What you lose remotely
You lose the ability to look at a first piece in person and to catch a drifting standard early. Both can be substantially replaced by process, but not by assumption.
Replacing the floor visit
- Request photographs of first pieces against a measuring tape
- Ask for measurement reports at first piece and mid run
- Have samples shipped at each stage rather than only at the end
- Schedule a recurring call during production rather than waiting for updates
Sampling still needs physical review
Fit cannot be evaluated from photographs. Budget for shipping samples back and forth, and build the transit time into your calendar.
Time zones are an advantage
Compared with overseas production, a domestic factory is available during a workday that overlaps yours. Questions get answered the same day, which is a meaningful part of the value.
Visit once if you possibly can
A single visit early in the relationship makes every subsequent remote interaction more efficient, because both sides have a shared reference for how the work happens.
