The patternmaker turns your intent into a set of shapes that a sewing operator can assemble. Most fit frustration comes from feedback that describes a feeling rather than a measurement.
What to bring
- A tech pack with points of measure
- A reference garment that fits the way you want, if one exists
- Your target customer and intended fit
- The actual production fabric, or a close substitute
Fabric changes the pattern
A pattern is developed for a specific fabric behaviour. Swapping fabric after the pattern is finalised often requires reworking it, particularly between knits and wovens or between different stretch levels.
Giving useful fit comments
Say where on the garment, in which direction, and by how much. Tight through the upper arm, needs roughly half an inch more, is actionable. Does not feel right is not.
A workable format
- Location on the garment
- The problem, stated as a direction
- The amount, estimated in real units
- Whether it should change across all sizes or only some
Change one thing at a time
Multiple simultaneous adjustments make it impossible to tell which one produced the result. Sequential revisions feel slower and usually converge faster.
Keep the block
Once a pattern fits, it becomes an asset. Future styles developed from an approved block start much closer to correct and need fewer rounds.
